BEYOND BALI

Discover Indonesia’s Hidden Gems

Belle Travel is based in Bali, and we love planning trips to this beautiful island we adore so much we made it home.  What you might not know, is that Bali is just one island in Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago.

With over 17,000 islands and countless unique experiences, there’s so much more to discover beyond the popular shores of Bali. Indonesia is home to the largest volcanic island in the world, the only place on earth you can see wild Orangutans, and the famous Komodo dragons? It also offers some of the best surfing and scuba diving spots on the globe.  In 2025, we invite you to explore the hidden gems of this magnificent country, Bali is just the beginning of the extraordinary adventures to be had here!

Here are our “top 5” destinations we have personally experienced… stay tuned for more!

Sumba

Dive into the enchanting world of Sumba Island, known for its breathtaking landscapes and wild cultural heritage. This remote paradise offers stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, and traditional villages where you can experience the unique Sumbanese culture, including intricate ikat weaving, traditional tribal ceremonies and wild horses.  Try to visit during the Pasola festival, where once a year, hundreds of warriors on horseback charge into each other hurling spears!  Unlike Bali, this island remains hardly touched by tourism but there are a couple luxury properties that draw guests year after year.  NIHI Sumba has been named #1 Hotel in the World a few times already, and offers guests the unique experience of SWIMMING with their amazing horses!  It’s also right in front of one of the most famous surf breaks in the world.

Kalimantan / Borneo

Borneo is the third-largest island in the world and is divided among three countries: Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia. Kalimantan specifically refers to the Indonesian portion of Borneo. It encompasses roughly 73% of the island and is known for its vast rainforests, unique wildlife, and indigenous Dayak cultures.  This island is a paradise for nature lovers, offering the chance to see orangutans in their natural habitat at Tanjung Puting National Park. We suggest spending a few nights cruising through winding rivers on a traditional klotok boat, and really immersing yourself in the vibrant ecosystem around you.  In addition to the many species of monkey to be spotted, this is heaven for bird watchers as well.

Raja Ampat Islands

Ahh the stunning Raja Ampat Islands, a diver’s paradise and one of the most biodiverse marine regions on the planet! With crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and an abundance of marine life, Raja Ampat offers unforgettable snorkeling and diving experiences. Explore the hidden lagoons and uninhabited islands, and witness breathtaking sunsets over the vast ocean. Beyond water activities, the islands also boast lush landscapes and unique wildlife, including the iconic bird of paradise. Raja Ampat is a dream destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.  In our opinion, the only way to do this is from a luxury live-aboard yacht.  Rascal Voyages is more like a floating luxury hotel offering incredible meals, spa treatments, and shore excusions in addition to the magical under-water world.

Java

Java is home to Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, although we don’t reccomend spending your time there…the rich traditions and stunning landscapes come together in East and Central Java. Home to the breathtaking Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia’s most iconic volcanoes, this region offers stunning sunrise views over the volcanic landscape. Visit the magnificent Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest Buddhist temple in the world, where you can marvel at its intricate carvings and breathtaking views.  The AMANJIWO was built to overlook the Borobudur temple, and incorporates ancient Javanese traditions into your experience.  Before you go, immerse yourself in the vibrant cultural scene of Yogyakarta, known for its emerging art scene, delicious cuisine, and lively markets.

Komodo Islands

Discover the mystical Komodo Islands, home to the legendary Komodo dragons, the largest lizards on Earth! This UNESCO World Heritage site offers breathtaking landscapes, from rugged hills to pristine beaches. Trek through the islands’ national park to spot these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat, and dive into the surrounding waters to explore vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. The islands are also known for their stunning pink beaches and clear turquoise waters, perfect for snorkeling or relaxing under the sun. This is another destination best experienced aboard a luxury yacht, but if you prefer to stay on land, the Ta’aktana is a newly opened luxury property that could serve as your base.

Brooke’s Travel Hacks: It’s all about the Guide

These people posses invaluable knowledge about the culture, history, and geography of the region, allowing you to gain deeper insights and appreciate the nuances of your surroundings. They can navigate complex transportation systems, help avoid tourist traps, and facilitate authentic experiences that may be inaccessible to outsiders. Additionally, a local guide often acts as a bridge between cultures, fostering meaningful interactions with locals and ensuring respectful engagement.
