BALI

Having spent over five incredible years in Bali, working in luxury hotels and as a Travel Advisor, I’m thrilled to share my expertise on planning your perfect trip to this beautiful island.

Bali can get a bit of a bad rap – I hear complaints about traffic, crowds, and less-than-ideal beaches. My response? Those folks just didn’t do it the right way!

In this guide, I’ll highlight some of my favorite areas and hidden gems that truly showcase what Bali has to offer. Whether you’re dreaming of serene beaches, vibrant culture, or lush landscapes, there's something here for everyone.

So if you’re ready to embark on your next Bali adventure, read on! And feel free to share this guide with anyone who might be dreaming of their own Bali getaway. I’m here make those travel dreams come true!

Jimbaran

Jimbaran is the perfect spot to kick off your Bali adventure, just a short 20-minute drive from the airport. After a long international flight, you’ll appreciate the ease of settling in here. While Jimbaran is primarily known for its stunning beaches, the real highlight is dining on the sand at sunset. Picture this: fishermen bringing in their fresh catches, which are grilled right in front of you as you sip a cocktail and watch the sun dip below the horizon. It’s a magical experience!  Hotel picks - you can enjoy the luxury at the Raffles or opt for something more affordable like the Intercontinental Jimbaran. Either way, you’re in for a treat.

Uluwatu

Next, let’s head south to Uluwatu, a stunning area known as the Bukit.  This is where we personally choose if we want some ocean time.  Perched high above the ocean on breathtaking cliffs, Uluwatu offers sweeping views of the bright blue waters below. The laid-back surf-town vibe here is palpable, and you’ll find some of the best waves in Bali. Just a heads up – accessing the beautiful beaches requires a bit of a trek down stairs, so it might not be the best choice for those with mobility issues.  Uluwatu is also home to some of Bali’s best beach clubs, perfect for soaking up the sun or enjoying a vibrant nightlife scene. There is also a beautiful clifftop temple where you can see famous Balinese dance performances nightly. Consider the Renaissance Uluwatu as a more affordable option or indulge in luxury at Bulgari.

Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua is where we send families and those looking for a relaxing resort escape. This area is predominantly lined with large, family-friendly resorts that offer a wide range of amenities, making it perfect for travelers with kids. Here, you can unwind on soft, white sands or indulge in a spa day while the little ones enjoy supervised activities. Nusa Dua has a world-class golf course as well. It’s also close to the airport making it a great place to start or end your Bali trip. Sofitel Nusa Dua Beach Resort usually has great rates available, The Apurva Kempinski is the most luxury option here.

Sanur

Sanur is a charming coastal town with perfectly laid-back vibes. Known for its calm waters and beautiful beachfront, Sanur is perfect for swimming and enjoying water sports without the hustle and bustle found in other areas of Bali. The beachfront promenade is lined with cozy cafes, restaurants, and local shops, making it easy to spend a leisurely day exploring. For families, the gentle waves and shallow waters make it a safe spot for children to play. It’s very close to the harbor where you can embark on a cruise ship or speed boats to other islands, and also close to the airport.   The Andaz Bali is always a favorite here with more of a lifestyle vibe, and the Hyatt Regency is a classic.

Seminyak

If you’re looking to party, shop, and dine, Seminyak is the place to be! This vibrant area boasts a fantastic lineup of hotels along the beach, all within walking distance of the action. With a beach club for every day of the week and plenty of spots to dance the night away, Seminyak offers a lively atmosphere like no other in Bali.  For those wanting to enjoy the best of Seminyak without breaking the bank, check out Indigo Seminyak, or splurge on a luxurious experience at The Legian Seminyak.

Canggu

Canggu (pronounced “Chang-goo”) has quickly become an influencer hotspot, rivaling Seminyak for its lively scene of parties, shopping, and beach clubs, while still retaining its charm with rice paddy fields and local warungs. This area is popular among expats, so you’ll find a plethora of top-notch spas, gyms, and eateries. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back afternoon at the beach or a more energetic night out, Canggu has it all.  Our go-to hotel choice is COMO Canggu, it feels super luxe, and has great wellness offerings without the crazy price tag.  A brand new luxury option is the Regent Canggu.

Ubud

Now, I must admit, there is a personal bias here – Ubud is our absolute favorite part of Bali and where we call home! Nestled in the jungle, away from the beaches, Ubud captures the true essence of Bali. This area is a haven for artisans, woodcarvers, and mask makers. You can explore stunning temples, picturesque rice paddies, and fascinating museums, or simply wander through the charming streets.  Adventure seekers will love the opportunities for white-water rafting or quad bike driving. And for foodies, Ubud is the ideal spot to take a Balinese cooking class or indulge in a tasting menu at one of the world-renowned fine-dining restaurants. Don’t forget to check out the amazing wine bar, Belle, for a little cheese and charcuterie to pair with your favorite bottle ;) For accommodations, consider 11 on Kajeng for a cozy, affordable option or pamper yourself at the super-luxe tented camp - Capella Ubud.

Munduk

If you venture further north from Ubud, you’ll discover Munduk, an area that showcases some of Bali’s unknown natural beauty with stunning mountains and serene lakes. Here, you can hike to breathtaking waterfalls or relax in natural hot springs. With cooler temperatures at night, it’s the perfect place to cozy up in a sweater or enjoy a soak in a hot tub. Munduk offers a peaceful escape with hardly any crowds or traffic.  For a unique stay, that costs less than the price of dinner in most places, consider Munduk Farm House. We love to treat ourselves at the beautiful Munduk Cabins.

East Bali

East Bali is an area often overlooked by tourists.  Areas like Sideman and Candidasa offer a nice blend of relaxation and adventure. This area is perfect for diving enthusiasts, with vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life just waiting to be explored. You can take day trips to nearby Amed, known for its exceptional diving spots and tranquil beaches. Don't miss the chance to visit the stunning Tirta Gangga Water Palace.  For those looking to immerse themselves in local culture, East Bali is home to some really charming traditional villages where you can witness the daily life of the Balinese people.  Alila Manggis is a hotel here that everyone adores, at a very approachable pricepoint.  The famous Amankila is where you stay if you want to splurge.

West Bali

If you’re seeking solitude and stunning natural beauty, West Bali is where you should go. The sparkling black sand beaches here are often deserted, giving you a sense of peace that’s hard to find elsewhere. Menganan is a fantastic spot for diving, with crystal-clear waters teeming with colorful fish and coral reefs. West Bali National Park offers hiking trails through lush forests and opportunities for birdwatching. You can also explore the serene coastline and visit traditional fishing villages for a taste of local life.  Surfers can also enjoy a few amazing breaks on this side of the island.  Its a beautiful escape a lot of us living in Bali run to when we needs some peace and quiet.  Affordable accommodation: Plataran Menganan.  Luxe option: Lost Lindenberg.

Brooke’s Travel Hacks: Traffic in Bali

Like anywhere else in the world, traffic can be avoided by traveling at the right time.  Would you jump on the 405 across LA at 5pm?  I think not.  Bali also has it’s own flow and we can help you choose the best route and times to move from one destination to another to avoid unnecessary delays to your vacation.
