MALDIVES

We recently returned from an incredible escape to the Maldives, and are here to share some genuine feedback on our experience with you! From the stunning white-sand beaches that look like a postcard to the pricy poolside cocktails, our journey was filled with unforgettable moments—and a few surprises.

In this newsletter, we’ll give you the scoop on what to expect (and what to maybe reconsider) when planning your own trip to this paradise. Whether you're dreaming of luxurious overwater bungalows or hunting for a hidden gem that won't break the bank, we’ve gathered tips to help you navigate this tropical wonderland!

Getting There….

The Maldives is a stunning tropical paradise located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka and India. This picturesque archipelago consists of about 1,200 islands, famous for its vibrant coral reefs and crystal-clear waters. When it comes to getting there, flights from the USA typically involve a couple of layovers and can take anywhere from 20 to 30 hours, depending on your starting point and your ability to endure airport snacks. From Europe, you’ll find more direct options, especially from major hubs like London and Frankfurt, with flight times averaging around 10 to 12 hours. People often combine this with a trip to Sri Lanka or India, or even Singapore.  So, whether you’re coming from across the pond or just a hop away, a little travel patience will reward you with the beauty of the Maldives!

Seaplane vs Speedboat

When it comes to choosing your accommodations in the Maldives, the mode of transport to your island getaway can make quite the difference! Once you land in Male, the main hub, you’ll then either need to board a seaplane or a speedboat to get to your private island.  Properties accessible by speedboat are typically located closer to the main airport, making them a convenient and quicker option.  Speedboats can also run in the dark, which means for your return to the airport you can stay in your luxe digs longer before jumping on what is usually a 30 - 60 minute speedboat ride. On the other hand, seaplane transfers are like a scenic adventure, offering breathtaking views of the turquoise lagoons and atolls below—if you can handle the thrill (for me terror) of being in a tiny aircraft.  You’ll usually have to wait a bit longer for plane departure, but most of the properties have their own luxury lounges for you to relax (snack!) and enjoy during the transition.  When the seaplane lands you’ll also need to maneuver yourself onto a tiny floating barge and then finally onto a boat taking you directly to the hotel dock.  This is not a stint I would advise for anyone with mobility issues.  So, while speedboat trips can be a bit faster & easier, seaplanes provide that dreamy, “I’m definitely on vacation” vibe.  There are some incredible properties and reefs only accessible this way.  Whether you opt for the splash of a speedboat or the aerial views from above, your arrival in paradise will be memorable either way!

Over-water vs Beachfront Rooms

Choosing between over-water rooms and beachside accommodations in the Maldives can feel like picking your favorite child—both have their perks! Over-water villas are the epitome of luxury, offering direct access to the shimmering sea and stunning views right from your deck. Picture yourself sipping a cocktail while watching fish swim beneath your feet—talk about living the dream! However, they are usually a lot further from the main facilities or the resort, and can feel a bit “claustrophobic” or isolated to some. On the flip side, beachside rooms provide a cozy, sandy retreat just steps away from the shoreline, making it easy to dive in for a morning swim or take strolls along the beach. They’re often more budget-friendly and give you that classic beach vibe, but you might have to share your view with a few sunbathers. Ultimately, whether you choose the allure of the open water or the charm of the beach, you’re in for a treat—just remember to pack your sunscreen!

Brooke’s Travel Hacks: The Resort Diet

Maldives properties usually give you the option of paying in advance for Bed & Breakfast, Full Board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) or Half Board (breakfast + dinner).   The best value in my opinion is the half-board price.  Reason being… the breakfast buffets on these islands are outrageously huge spreads, and always open until early afternoon.  You can easily fill yourself on a “brunch” that will keep you full until dinner.  If you need something else there are usually complimentary snacks in your room and other areas of the property, and of course you and always order a light lunch a la carte.
